One thing you will find as you embrace a yoga regular practice is that other changes soon start to appear in your life. You begin to become more conscious of everything that goes into both body and mind, including the thoughts you think, the emotions you take on – and the fuel you put into your body. It’s no wonder so many yogis embrace healthy, organic eating; we want to make sure that only the best goes into keeping this amazing vessel running! One yogi who has heartily embraced this change is Tiia, a Santosha Level 1 graduate who runs a raw food blog called Raw Food Getting Started. We are so lucky to have her share some of her favourite smoothie recipes for brain fog, beating sugar cravings and increased immunity with us on the blog… hope you enjoy 🙂

Feeling a Bit Foggy?

Brain fog is not a medical term, however people commonly refer to feeling “foggy”. It is normal to feel tired as a result of a busy lifestyle or lack of sleep, however, not so normal to have a foggy head on a regular basis. Feeling foggy-headed can be lifestyle related, the side effect of a medication or medical condition. You will often hear people say ‘maybe it’s something I ate’. Often this is the case. And then ‘it’s time for a cleanse!’

Try this mild Cleansing Smoothie…

CLEANSING SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Cups Baby spinach
  • 1/2 Lebanese Cucumber
  • 1/2 Lemon, peeled
  • Large cube ginger
  • 5 Cups water
  • 1 Cup of ice

METHOD

Place all ingredients into a high speed blender for 45 seconds. Add water more ice if desired. Reduce ingredients and water if using NutriBullet by 1/3rd.

SERVES

Four large glasses or jars (4 adults) or eight smaller glasses or jars (8 children)

TIIA SUGGESTS

Share with friends or family, or pour into a large jar or jug to be consumed throughout the day during a cleanse. Very easy to drink because of the water-like consistency, this smoothie would be an ideal, refreshing summer drink. Add a little pineapple and a bit of mint to make this extra yum! It is a good idea to pour smoothie into a jar, bottle or jug with a lid and give it a little shake before serving. Separation occurs as a result of the large quantity of water.

Keep in mind, this smoothie is mild and will help assist to clear a foggy head if lifestyle related. Please seek trusted professional advice if you feel uncertain. Always trust your gut.

 

Have a serious Sugar Craving you need to beat?

The Female Moon Cycle and sugar cravings seem to go hand in hand!. Theories surround this connection, however none have been scientifically proven. Hormone imbalance, deceased serotonin, low blood sugar level, iron deficiency…?

Change occurs throughout the duration of every month – this is true. Be aware and mindful, trust yourself and… listen to your body! Attempt to stick to what you know is good for you. This is definitely a time to continue to nurture and care for yourself, if so, more than usual.

In saying that, yesterday = straight to chocolate aisle, purchased chocolate bar and gobbled it up! Did it satisfy? For about 5 minutes – sugar high, followed by the sugar low…

Today a cup of green tea and GREEN BANANA SMOOTHIE! An hour or so later, feeling much happier and healthy in knowing that I am caring for myself…sugar cravings? What sugar cravings? Thank you nature!

GREEN BANANA SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 ripe bananas
  • 2 pitted prunes/ or 1 Medjool Date
  • 1 handfuls of baby spinach leaves
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of ice

METHOD

Break banana into pieces, straight into high-speed blender with other ingredients. Blend for 20 seconds, or until smooth. Use tamper if needed or wooden spoon to push spinach down a little. Add ice last after first blend for an additional 10-20 seconds. Add more water to desired consistency.

SERVES

One large glass or jars (1 Adult) 0r two smaller glasses or jars (2 children)

CHEFS SUGGESTIONS

Adding ice in the warmer months makes for a refreshing smoothie. Add to blender mix and or in glass on pouring. Or both 🙂

 

Feeling a cold or flu coming on? Oh oh… time for….

IMMUNE BOOST SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 whole carrot, washed, not peeled
  • 1 whole orange, peeled
  • 1/2 lemon, option; leave zest (skin) on
  • Ginger, a slice or cube, add more to taste
  • 1/2 cup of water, add more water to thin if desired

METHOD

Chop carrot into cubes, quarter orange and lemon into blender with ginger and water – 45 seconds, high-speed blender. Check consistency, blend or add more water; personal preference.

SERVES

2 large glasses or jars (2 Adult) 4 small glasses or jars (4 Children)

CHEFS NOTES

Top up on the ginger, it is great for immunity! With seasonal oranges being so sweet, it is possible to add more ginger without the flavour of the ginger becoming too overpowering. I find a cup of water with this recipe is much more enjoyable…
